Providing Individual Care
NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funds the costs associated with disability. The scheme was legislated in 2013 by the Australian Government and is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Access to full funding for people under 65 and with a “permanent and significant” disability is potentially available for any “reasonable and necessary” support need related to the disability. The funding is allocated to the individual, and the individual or their guardian then choose which providers supply the qualifying goods and services. Certain restrictions do apply and a proper assessment is required.
“The NDIS is not a welfare system. The NDIS is designed to help people get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time.”
NDIS Categories
The NDIS funds support under three categories:
- Core funding: for day to day support required, such as personal care.
- Capacity funding: for skill building, training and learning. Support must be considered “reasonable and necessary” to be funded.
- Capital funding: for purchasing one off items such as equipment, technology or modifications.
Planning and NDIS
NDIS works by having a planning meeting and then calculating the best possible plan for the services required to fully assist the individual and their disability. Support and assistance are calculated on an individual case basis and so you need to be aware of how to prepare for your NDIS planning meeting.
The NDIS also provides booklets that help describe the process:
